1000! And One City Walk – The Anniversary Tour

“Then the brave Bishop Eid, who had just returned from Poland bearing great gifts, was taken ill and passed his loyal soul back to Christ in urbe Libzi (the Fortress of Leipzig) on the 20th day of December.” These words were noted by Thietmar, Bishop of Merseburg (975/976-1018), in the seventh book of his chronicle for the year 1015, which, to this day, remains the first written record of Leipzig.
A thousand years of Leipzig! We are celebrating with a year-long festival in 2015. We will be searching through the historical evidence and reflecting on the ten centuries in a two-hour tour: Where was the Fortress of Leipzig actually located? Where were the core settlements and how did they grow into a city? Who was in power at that time? What regulations on market privileges and duties were in place? What contributed to Leipzig’s rise and what were the most important milestones? And what buildings, oddities, and structures have survived the centuries for us to see today? Stroll through the city with us and breathe in its history. This tour can be booked as a private tour for your group.
