He was born in Leipzig in 1813, the year of the Battle of the Nations. Here he distinguished himself in his childhood and teens in music and his ambition to become a musician grew. But the musical dramatist’s relationship to the city of his birth – and city’s tolerance for him – had its ups and downs. You will hear the reasons why as we follow in Richard Wagner’s footsteps to his birthplace then on to where his early works were first performed, learning who his teachers were and which ideas influenced him.
